David had been riding since the age of six was introduced to the sport of three-day eventing though his local pony club when he was sixteen. He is drawn to the challenge of mastering the disciplines of dressage, show jumping and cross-country riding country-riding. At the University of California, David was the captain of the UCD Eventing Team. During this time he began developing his own teaching and training style, working with the local Pony Clubs in the Davis area. In 1990 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Science and Management and is a Level 3 ICP certified instructor. He is a certified cross country-course designer with the United States Eventing Association. From 2006-2008 he was the USEA Area VI (California) Chairman.
David has worked extensively with Brian Sabo (whose mentor was the renowned dressage rider Hilda Gurney) and USET team member and FEI judge Jim Graham. Other strong influences on his riding and training have come from work with Jimmy Wofford, Mark Phillips, Karen O'Connor, Christopher Bartle, Lilo Fore for dressage, and Susie Hutchison and Anne Kursinski for show jumping.
David was first at Hawkwood in 1993, where he was given an off-the track Thoroughbred mare to train. With David, Layla competed successfully at the Advanced Level and was ranked the # 7 mare in the country.
In 2012, David returned to Hawkwood after spending five years competing and training on the East Coast circuit where he competed successfully through the advanced level on Prince Noah and River King, both horses he had brought along from the Novice level. Since back in California he has brought up three more horses to the CCI* level
David's training is challenging and personalized; he enjoys training advanced riders with high aspirations and young riders.
Adamo Eventing includes an active competition schedule at Horse Trials all over California and neighboring states. His students also benefit from frequent schooling clinics at Woodside and Fresno Horse Parks and Twin Rivers Ranch. Team Adamo has a great time together, at home training and at events.
David is not only an inspirational trainer of his riders but also an actively competing rider on the event circuit, winning the 2014 Preliminary Horse Challenge at the Woodside Horse Park.
lori fields: hunters/jumpers
Lori, Hawkwood’s jumper trainer, also began riding and showing as a junior. As a junior rider in Southern California, she trained with Russell and Rusty Stewart and participated in many George Morris clinics. When she moved north to Mendocino, Lori spent some time training in dressage but found that she missed the action and returned to show jumping.
Since 1992, she has had her own business, Ridgetop Ranch, training amateurs of all levels; before coming to Hawkwood, she managed her own barn in Mendocino County and then in Marin County under the name of Ridge Top Ranch. She also has trained her son, Jeff Fields, now a successful Grand Prix rider, and her daughter Nikki who still competes in the high amateur jumper classes. She assists her mother in the summer.
Lori has developed her distinct style of training using her years of experience as a rider: she is one of those rare trainers who can see the little things that make a big difference in one's riding and communicates clearly to her riders. As a trainer, she provides one on one coaching as well as small groups. Her lessons are not only productive but a lot of fun as well.
After many years pursuing an active show schedule, Lori decided that she would spend more time with her clients who wanted to work on improving their riding and deepening their appreciation of their horses. She provides a supportive environment, with training that is fun, challenging and confidence-building.
